Lack of Children Diversity on YouTube

Diversity on YouTube

This is a topic I have been wanting to address for awhile because diversity is so important for my children and family. My daughter loves YouTube, but I find that I have to monitor what she watches regularly.  Not just because of the sickening tricks that people play on the platform, but I also have to watch and monitor how she feels as a young African American child. This may not be a worry of a lot of parents, but it concerns me when my daughter ask for her hair to be like other cultures or feel that she is not beautiful at the age of four.

I knew I had to put a stop to this. I compiled a list of African American channels that appear to provide substance, a good role model, strong in cultural diversity and included education. I compiled a short list of channels that you may find useful. This list is short, but please feel free to comment if there are others out that that you recommend.

5 Diverse YouTube Channels
1. Onyx Kids - This channel follows young teenagers youthful adventures in life. Most of the settings include their home and fun, positive challenges that they have with their friends. They also address character building through their many adventures. This channel caters to age 4 and up as the kids range in age. Check out Onyx Kids at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpJlmVOckoFYvK4Mf7tM4bQ

2.  2.  Naiah and Elli - I absolutely love this channel. The girls are smart and very charming. Most of their videos consist of playtime, color and food challenges. I like how they take simple concepts such as appropriate role play and make it so engaging for children. My daughter loves to play with her dolls and interact with the girls throughout the show. Naiah and Elli can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC21LBTN66AkhehxaYr8Vowg

3. Mcclure Twins Family - The twins are so cute. I was drawn in my this channel when I discovered a video about the twins explaining their similarities and differences. This channel focuses on the twins exploring their environment in school, their personal appearance and their family life. If you enjoy watching positive interactions between the twins and their family, check out the Mcclure family: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNm8WjumwijTwIVmCOLi0KQ

4. GooGoo Colors - This family has several channels, but I really enjoy the preschool based channel because it is engaging and the setting is very realistic including their home, store or adventures outside. I also like that the character talks to the kids and try to get them to answer questions.  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx0eQsDrjn-EXMWeusTh2cQ

5. Akili and Me - This is a cartoon channel similar to Dora the Explorer and other educational videos that address phonics, grammar and is African themed. The beats and music is so addicting. I love it because it gets my child excited and has helped her learn more about letter sounds. They also do African themed remixes on popular songs like Baby Shark!  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0TLvo891eEEM6HGC5ON7ug
